The morning of June 19, 2019, I knew something was wrong with my body. Last Summer, I was taking college classes and I had a class that morning. Before I got ready to go to that class, I worked out because when I work out in the mornings, I have a much better day. Mind you, it was also the first day of my time of the month…
Out of no where, I started feeling really sick, I felt horrible!
I felt so sick to my stomach to the point I threw up.
I had excruciating cramps in my stomach and I can’t even put into words to describe how it felt.
I remember going to get a drink of water in the kitchen and my eyesight was going dim.
I felt like I was about to pass out and it was so scary.
I didn’t even want to eat breakfast because I literally couldn’t bring myself to make anything, I literally couldn’t function.
It was also difficult to get comfortable as I was lying down on my bed. I kept switching positions and it seemed like nothing helped.
I remember crying because I felt that bad. I just wanted whatever this was to go away quickly.
I was confused.
I was scared.
To be honest, this moment was when I started fearing my period.
I also feared working out while on my period because I didn’t want this to happen to me ever again.
I didn’t understand why it happened.
Thankfully, everything went away before I had to go to class because if I was still feeling like that, I probably would have stayed home all day!
June 19, 2019, was the day I woke up and realized that I needed to start taking care of my body.
I didn’t know why this happened, but I was determined to get to the bottom of it, so I took myself to the Doctor.
This was the beginning of my PCOS Journey and it took many appointments and blood tests to figure out what was wrong.
I remember after that first appointment, I got a lot of blood drawn because my Doctor wanted to test everything, especially my hormones. This was also when I first discovered my DHEA-S being so high compared to the normal range. I didn’t know the cause of it, so I did some research and discovered that it’s a symptom of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Side note: the last time I got my DHEA-S level tested was in November and I’ll be getting it retested soon, so I’m curious to see if it went down any compared to what it was in November!
There were so many other things that were going on with my body that I flat out kept ignoring until June 19, 2019, led me to take immediate action.
Because of this one day that led me to take action, my body is in a better place now!
The last time I felt so horrible to the point I threw up while on the first day of my period was in November! With that being said, I haven’t felt that way in a really long time and I think it’s because of going to the chiropractor regularly because ever since I started going, I haven’t been feeling that way!
Because of what happened on June 19, 2019, I made that first Doctor appointment, got referred to an Endocrinologist, got more blog tests done, was diagnosed with PCOS, didn’t go the birth control route, went to see a naturopathic doctor (I wanted to help my body the best way I can naturally and this experience of seeing a naturopathic doctor was different – I felt like I didn’t belong there and they wanted me to spend soooo much money and wanted me to see them regularly, which that also cost a lot.), I went to see my cousin who is a chiropractor, she started giving me adjustments every week and then we included acupuncture, she referred me to another chiropractor who does more of the nutrition aspect of things and I got another blood test done to see where all of my vitamins and minerals levels were at, and now I’m on supplements that I take every single day.
June 19, 2019. Everything I stated above happened all because of that one day. It caused me to start being proactive in my health and being an advocate for my body. I could have agreed with my Endocrinologist and be like yeah, put me on birth control. It’s funny how I was so close to taking the “easy” way out right before I called my cousin when I scheduled my first chiropractor appointment! I was tempted to go that route and I’m thankful I didn’t because who knows where my body would be today if I was on birth control compared to healing my body naturally.
At the end of the day, you need to do what is best for you and your body. For me, I knew I needed to go the natural route instead of taking synthetic hormones that supposedly make everything better.
I’m so thankful my body hasn’t felt horrible in these past 7 months and it’s such a blessing that I haven’t thrown up since November because I don’t want to ever feel that way ever again.
This is a reminder to take care of the body you’re in and be aware of things that are unusual. If it wasn’t for me realizing that me throwing up while on my period doesn’t normally happen like, I haven’t ever done that before and realizing that made take action right away. Don’t just tell yourself to wait it out another month to see if whatever it is will happen again during the next month because that is a never ending cycle; I even did that with other things my body was trying to make me aware of, but for the longest, I wasn’t listening.
Don’t be afraid to look back on how far you have come because when you look back, you will see everything you did to get to where you are now at this very moment.
“Fall in love with taking care of yourself. Mind. Body. Spirit.”
I added a new page to this blog and I encourage all of you to check it out! For those of you who are new here, I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) in December of 2019. I have been documenting everything that I have been through and experienced – from discussing my symptoms before I knew what was wrong, all the way to what I am doing now to help my body. My goal is to balance my hormones naturally without taking birth control. I want to give other women with PCOS hope that birth control isn’t the only option.
